Armenian highways under major repair

YEREVAN, MAY 2, ARMENPRESS: Edward Bezoyan, head of an office supervising the implementation of a major road reconstruction project funded by a US-based Lincy Foundation, said the project is set to be brought to completion by the end of October, 2003. He said the biggest portion of a 63-km long highway leading from the capital Yerevan to the town of Sevan has been repaired. The remaining part of 13 km will be repaired in a month, he said.

The other road under an intensive reconstruction stretches from Sevan to the resort town of Dilijan. Bezoyan also said the construction of a tunnel that will go under a mountain pass to provide the shortest and safest route to Dilijan and from there to north-eastern parts of the country is moving ahead. The road from Dilijan to Vanadzor was repaired in 2002 but due to heavy rains and cold winter some parts of it were destroyed. Bezoyan they are being now repaired too.

Reconstruction is also underway on a road leading from Dilijan to Ijevan, bordering with neighboring Azerbaijan. Also a road from Ijevan to Noyemberian is being reconstructed. A new road built from Martuni, in the province of Gegharkunik, to Yeghegnadzor, across the Selim mountain pass, is also underway. It will give the shortest route from southern Armenia to its northern and eastern parts. The Lincy Foundation has allocated $71.4 million for implementation of this project.
